Kevin Wallhead BA - Glass Artist

As a drawing medium, glass and its inclusions, can be a refreshing alternative not normally associated with traditional drawing techniques.  Simple and true images can be recreated, replacing pencil and paper with copper and glass. Construction lines are a vital ingredient in preliminary drawing but are seldom seen as they are smothered by the finished work.

The enjoyment of drawing the human form, simplicity and relationships are but a few culminated interests that have inspired the images I create, it is an important factor that the viewer interprets my drawings with their own ideologies and can relate them to their personal experiences and relationships. Even my simplistic stick figure images that can be drawn from childhood arouse differing responses as to how they are perceived by the individual.
More recently I have explored our relationship with this vast space we inhabit creating space-scapes by incorporate glass frit (granular glass),giving the solar scene a sense of depth, texture and fluidity.

As we know, climate change is accelerating at a very high rate, as a  result of the increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases emitted from vehicles, industries, power plants etc.  Subsequently, the alarming rate at which the polar ice caps are melting has   become an increasingly discussed topic among environmentalists, scientists, politicians and the public alike.

My latest works titled Iceflows and Fields are a direct response to this. These sculptural pieces are a reflection of a cold delicate environment and how it is affected by ‘global warming’ and ‘global dimming’.

I feel we all need a constant reminder of the fragility of our own existence and the responsibilities we have for future generations.
My work has now evolved into imaginary space-scapes, incorporating glass frit (granular glass) giving the solar scene a sense of depth, texture and fluidity.  It explores our relationship with this vast space we inhabit, ecologically, politically and socially. In this current climate of ‘global warming’ and ‘global dimming’, we all need a reminder of the fragility of our own existence and the responsibilities we have for future generations.

Kevin produces wall-mounted and freestanding glass panels and welcomes commissions for a contemporary alternative to traditional stained glass.  Previous commissions include a Golden Jubilee presentation piece for HM Queen Elizabeth II and awards for Carlton Television studios.
