SOO DURHAM - CERAMICIST
My main area of work and expertise is raku which is my passion. However I also work with white earthenware clay and Scarva's black clay body. My pieces are slab built and decorated with slips, glazes and lustres.
The small bowls are thrown using raku clay, earthenware clay, black clay and porcelain clay. For my wall pieces I use the black clay body with earthenware paper-clay additions which are then raku fired.

My forms and decoration are quite simple, providing a canvas for the glazes and fire on which to perform. I simply take a piece so far, letting the clay speak, a Japanese saying, then relinquish it to the fire to complete, the result; always exciting, mostly frustrating, occassionally exhilarating - always compelling. It is a long and happy journey; the permutations are endless - more then one's lifespan - and so it will go on. |

My inspiration lies in all things oriental, art, ceramics, culture and the serenity and simplicity; that surrounds it. The word raku loosely translated can mean enjoyment, pleasure, comfort, happiness and contentment. Which is all anyone could ever wish for.
